Rovuma offshore, Area 1

The EPCC was awarded in the second offshore licensing round, in the shallow to deep offshore the northern part of the Cabo Delgado Province, in the Rovuma sedimentary basin.(Link to the signed EPCC )

Here is a brief description of the contract.

Concession area Rovuma offshore, Area 1 (EPCC) Background, activities carried out, status, and further plans
Year awarded 2006

The EPCC was awarded in the second offshore licensing round, in the shallow to deep offshore the northern part of the Cabo Delgado Province, in the Rovuma sedimentary basin.

The contract was split into two exploration periods, of 5 years + 3 years. The work commitment included:

First exploration period - 5 years:

  • reprocess 1000 km of existing 2D seismic
  • acquisition of minimum 1000 km 2D seismic and minimum 3000 sq.km of 3D seismic
  • drill minimum 7 exploration wells

Second exploration period - 3 years:

  • acquisition of minimum 2000 sq.km of 3D seismic
  • drill minimum 4 exploration wells

During the overall exploration period, 7678 km of 2D seismic and 7421 sq.km of 3D seismic data were acquired.

In February 2010 the well Windjammer made the first gas discoveries in the offshore part of the Rovuma Basin, proving gas in 4 reservoirs in Oligocene and Paleocene. It was followed by about 40 wildcat and appraisal wells drilled from late 2009 to 2015, resulting in several gas discoveries.

Five Discovery Areas of totally 4938sq.km have been approved, of which the Prosperidade Discovery Area has reservoirs straddling the Concession Contract Area border between Area 1 and Area 4. A total of about 85 tcf of gas in place were estimated for the Area 1 and Area 4 straddling reservoirs in Oligocene and Eocene, about half of this in each Area. The Discovery Areas are:

  • Prosperidade Discovery Area (430 sq.km), assessment ongoing (5 straddling reservoirs in Oligocene, Eocene and Paleocene, and small non-straddling reservoirs in Miocene and Oligocene. Nearly 45 tcf in-place in 5 reservoirs straddling the Concession Contract Area border between Area 1 and Area 4).
  • Tubarão Discovery Area (308 sq.km), assessment ongoing (Eocene reservoir, with an estimate of nearly 2 tcf gas in-place)
  • Golfinho-Atum Discovery Area (1630 sq.km). PoD approved in February 2018 for the Phase I development of the Golfinho/Atum gas field (two Oligocene reservoirs with an estimate of about 35 tcf gas in place).  Anticipated production start: about 2023.
  • Orca Discovery Area (1357 sq.km), assessment ongoing (Paleocene and Cretaceous reservoirs, partly shared reservoirs with the Tubarão Tigre Discovery Area, and with a joint total estimate of nearly 10 tcf gas in-place)
  • Tubarão Tigre Discovery Area (1254 sq.km), assessment ongoing (Cretaceous reservoirs)

The Golfinho-Atum field includes two gas reservoirs, Oligocene Fan 1 and Oligocene Fan 2, discovered in the well Golfinho-1 in 2012, and appraised 2012-2015 by more than 15 wells. The Plan of Development (PoD) for Golfinho/Atum was approved in 2017. Production is expected to start in 2023, with construction of onshore LNG facilities in Afungi, in the Palma district in Cabo Delgado province.
