MAPUTO, October 08, 2019 - The National Petroleum Institute announces that Area partners of AREA 4, led by operator Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), signed today the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract with JFT. JFT is a consortium of companies composed by JGC, Fluor and TechnipFMC, which will build the liquefaction plant for the Rovuma LNG Project. This is the second onshore project for liquefying natural gas approved by the Government of Mozambique.
In a ceremony witnessed by the President of Mozambique, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the partners of Area 4 made a commitment to continue investing in activities related to the project until the Final Investment Decision, to be announced in 2020. These include activities such as the pioneer construction camp, continuation of resettlement activities, airstrip and access roads as well as the start of detailed engineering of the LNG facilities.
Recently, in June this year, the Government approved the Rovuma LNG Project Development Plan, which aims to produce, construction of two natural gas liquefaction trains, with a total LNG nameplate capacity of 15.2 million tonnes annually, as well as associated onshore facilities.
In his speech, President Nyusi said it was necessary to use the resources to accelerate the economic development of the country. To this end, entrepreneurs and all Mozambicans should be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities created by the implementation of oil and gas projects in Mozambique. For instance, the project foresees the creation of 5000 jobs during the construction phase of the plant and 1500 during the operation phase. Mozambicans need to be trained, with the support of the concessionaires, to actively participate in the development of the resource.
Rovuma LNG Project, an investment of USD 23.6 billion includes the construction of two natural gas liquefaction trains with a total capacity of 15.2 million tonnes of LNG per year as well as the construction of associated onshore facilities, whose first gas production is scheduled for 2025.
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture S.p.A. (MRV), an incorporated joint venture owned by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70 percent interest in the Area 4 exploration and production concession contract. In addition to MRV, Galp, KOGAS and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos E.P. each hold a 10 percent interest in Area 4.
ExxonMobil is leading the construction and operation of natural gas liquefaction and related facilities on behalf of MRV, and Eni is leading the construction and operation of upstream facilities.
