Maputo, 5 November 2020 – Area 4 partners announced the assembly of the last production module of the Coral Sul FLNG train. It is the 13th surface module of the hull of the platform that makes up the total modules of the natural gas treatment and liquefaction plant of the South FLNG Coral Platform.
The assembly of this module marks the end of the campaign for the manufacture of onshore modules, construction of the hull and production modules of the floating platform that began in September 2019, followed by the launch of the hull in January 2020 and the assembly of the first production module in May of the same year. Despite this milestone, the construction process continues, with integration and commissioning activities taking place.
Reacting to the announcement, Carlos Zacarias, Chairman of INP, said that "This is another milestone that demonstrates the full commitment of the concessionaires of Area 4 to complete all phases of the project, within the schedule agreed with the Government and ensure that the first rovuma gas is produced and exported in 2022". This is undoubtedly a project that will change the face of Mozambique, Zacarias stressed.
Roberto Dall'Omo, Managing Director of Eni Rovuma Basin, said that "This is a great achievement for Area 4 Partners, amid all the difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and confirms our commitment to the successful development of the South Coral Project."
It is recalled that this is the first floating liquefied natural gas platform to operate in deep water worldwide, more than 2000 meters deep, and is being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea. The project's local content plan offers training and employment opportunities in Mozambique and abroad, confirming the continued commitment of Area 4 Partners to the country's sustainable and long-term development.
The Coral Sul FLNG Project had the Final Investment Decision announced on June 1, 2017 and provides for:The design of a floating natural gas liquefied unit (FLNG) to be installed at sea with capacity to produce 3.4 MTPA (million tons per year), using the resources from the isolated Coral South reservoir with resource potential of about 15.7 TCF's;
Drilling of 6 gas production wells, whose drilling campaign began in September 2019 but due to COVID 19 was discontinued and the drilling of holes was rescheduled for 2021;
A US$7 billion investment which can generate direct profits of around US$39.1 billion of which about US$19.3 billion for the Mozambican state over the course of the 25-year project.
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture S.p.A. (MRV), an incorporated joint venture owned by Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC, which holds a 70% share in the Exploration and Production Concession Agreement of Area 4. The consortium also includes Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos E.P. (ENH), Galp Energia Rovuma B.V. and KOGAS Moçambique Ltd. each with 10% participatory interest. Eni leads the construction and operation of the floating liquefied natural gas facility on behalf of MRV.
