Government Reaffirms Intention to Launch The 6th Bidding Round in 2021

Speaking at the end of the proceedings of the VI Session of MIREME's Coordinating Council, which had been in course since last Monday, 25.10.2021, in the city of Pemba in Cabo Delgado, Max Tonela said that the world is already in the process of energy transition and, therefore, gas is a sustainable approach to respond to the challenge that the world is faced with.

"Natural gas presents itself as the option for the global energy transition and we see that Mozambique's projects are at the heart of the concessionaires' strategy," said Tonela in his speech.

Still on the issue of climate change, the Minister highlighted in his speech that the country has been engaged adopting measures leading to the protection of the environment, and exemplified the fact with the promotion of the use of other energy sources by the population. "The LPG massification initiative, which aims at reducing the pressure on forests, in the search for wood products, the main source for the cooking of food for the majority of Mozambicans, is one of the measures that demonstrates Mozambique's strong commitment to the climate agenda", the Minister of Energy revealed.

Summing up, Max Tonela said that for the purpose of the sixth round, sixteen areas have been identified, stressing that the tender should be launched this year and the process should be concluded in the third quarter of 2022.

The country has so far held five concession bidding rounds for hydrocarbon exploration and production areas, some of which have resulted in the discovery of massive quantities of natural gas, leading to the approval of important gas projects that will promote the country's social and economic development.
