INP Chairman-The Government Targets Energy Sector Professional

Maputo, 04 July 2022 -His name is Nazário Joel Julião de Jesus Bangalane. He has just been sworn in as the new National Petroleum Institute Chairman.

The swearing in of the new helmsman of the entity in charge of promoting and overseeing upstream petroleum operations in Mozambique took place a few moments ago at the Prime Minister's Office in Maputo. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Carlos Joaquim Zacarias.

Nazário Bangalane, who obtained his Master's degree in Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, has already held other management positions throughout his career. While at INP, Bangalane was in charge of the Supervision and Safety Department and recently held the post of Director of Projects and Development at INP.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, The Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane said that it fell to the new INP helmsman and his team, to meet the structural challenges that emerge from the development of hydrocarbons, both from the point of view of regulation of operations, as well as the management of the enormous expectations arising from the potential that the production and export of gas from the Rovuma Basin represent to the country as a whole.

The new INP Chairman declared, at the end of the Inauguration Ceremony, that he was aware of the challenges of the sector, however, he was confident that the legacy left by the previous Board of Directors and the skilled staff that INP maintains, would largely assist in the work to be developed.

The INP had been carrying out its activities with no chairman since Carlos Joaquim Zacarias, then Chairman, left the seat vacant following his appointment as Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy in March this year.

Bangalane's appointment was approved by the Cabinet during its 21st Ordinary Session, held on 21 June 2022, at a time when ENI and its partners in area 4 confirmed the onset of commissioning for the production of LNG, through the floating platform Coral Sul FLNG, an infrastructure already positioned in ultra-deep waters in the north of the country.

Since its establishment, INP has had two chairmen, Eng Bangalane being the third to rise to the position at the top of the institution's hierarchy.
